City of Sparks and RTC of Washoe Recognized for Long Term Vision Thanks to Concrete Roadway Projects

(RENO, NV) -- The American Concrete Pavement Association’s Southwest Chapter presented its coveted “Municipal Concrete Pavement Award” to the City of Sparks and the Regional Transportation Commission of Washoe County for three 2008 road projects.

Concrete has helped transform Hulda Way and Nichols Blvd. in Sparks from rutted and cracking thoroughfares into smooth-rolling, longer-lasting, brighter and truck-friendly roadways.

Nichols Blvd., adjacent to the Sierra Sid’s truck stop, and Hulda Way, a key access route to the Alamo Truck Stop, can now stand up to the constant truck traffic thanks to concrete.

“The truck traffic and the life cycle costs were certainly determining factors for paving with concrete,” said Andy Echeita, Capital Projects Coordinator for the City of Sparks.

“The placement of the concrete by Q&D Construction went very quickly and smoothly. It is a well-designed product and we made sure there was plenty of quality control during the placement,” he said. “While concrete may not be something we can do on every major project, it can certainly offer the most bang for the buck over the long term.”

In the same vein as the City of Sparks’, the Regional Transportation Commission repaved a section of Greg Street from Sparks Blvd to Larkin Circle. This roadway is another popular truck route serving the industrial/warehousing area of east Sparks.

The awards were presented today at the 10th Annual Sierra Nevada Concrete Association’s Concrete Expo, held at Lawlor Events Center.
